Why trek with Australian Kokoda Tours in 2022
Our team at Australian Kokoda Tours is excited to kick off the 2022 trekking season in March! We have lots of exciting treks coming up this year, including our Komatsu private trek, as well as school treks with Geelong Grammar School, St Joseph’s College Geelong, Saint Ignatius College Geelong, and Western Heights College.
This year, some of our past trekkers will be returning to Papua New Guinea with Australian Kokoda Tours to take on the trek once again with our team. It’s great to see that our past trekkers enjoyed their Kokoda experience so much to want to return to Kokoda.
Why choose Australian Kokoda Tours?
Below we have included some of the benefits of trekking Kokoda with Australian Kokoda Tours in 2022:
8-week training program
Anyone deemed fit from a medical examination can take on Kokoda, both young and old. Our trekkers don’t need to be extremely fit, but we do encourage trekkers to take part in our 8-week training program before heading to Kokoda to ensure that they are physically prepared for the challenge of trekking for eight days straight.
Australian Kokoda Tours Director Mick O’Malley also owns and operates Geelong gym O’Malley Fitness. This means that trekkers in the area can partake in Kokoda training at the gym and practise treks, while those who don’t live locally can follow the training program from home.
Safety and insurance
All of our Kokoda treks are led by Remote Wilderness First Aid Accredited Australian guides. We also don’t fly directly into Kokoda, as flying into Popondetta is considered much safer by many pilots.
Our team carry satellite phones and radios to contact home each night and authorities in Port Moresby if needed.
All of the vehicles we use for transport are registered, and all drivers are licensed. We also maintain public liability insurance.
Stay at the Hilton Hotel pre and post trek
Unlike other Kokoda trekking companies, Australian Kokoda Tours trekkers get to experience 5-star luxury both before and after trekking Kokoda. The Hilton Hotel is Papua New Guinea’s leading hotel and is just 10 minutes from the airport for added convenience.
Mick’s passion for the Kokoda Campaign
Mick has trekked Kokoda 67 times as of the end of 2019 and has been operating Australian Kokoda Tours since 2006. Our trekkers regularly comment on Mick’s knowledge of Kokoda’s history and his involvement in local villages to the track.
Mick was named again president of the Kokoda Tour Operators Association (KTOA) for 2021 to work with the Australian and Papua New Guinean governments and fellow trek operators to implement benefits to local landowners and communities.
